From drip irrigation systems to artificial insemination, Evergreen engaged in a wide range of locally appropriate agricultural projects in Shanxi. As subsistence farmers are increasingly competing against larger scale agribusiness farms, the challenge of making ends meet in rural Shanxi has only increased. Evergreen transitioned through a series of agricultural projects, all designed to enable local farmers to increase their income and escape the cycle of poverty that entangles so many rural Shanxi residents.

While Evergreen’s agricultural work has over the years operated a model pig farm, a cheese factory and a plant “doctor” consulting service, more recent efforts focused on sustainability and organic technologies as key pathways to enabling small-scale farmers to compete in the evolving agricultural marketplace.
